Lost Connections in the Halls of Academia
Sylvia tries to call Theresa again, but without success. Suddenly she remembers they’ve added each other on the “Find My”-app on their phones last summer when they took a trip to Rome, she quickly opens it to see her last location. It’s showing that she was right here, 15 minutes ago, at this exact spot. Sylvia nervously looks around her, still not a soul to be seen, except for the students across the road who are about to enter their school. She starts to panic and tries calling again. This time she gets a dial tone, thank god! It takes forever for an answer, but just when Sylvia thought it was going to voicemail, the phone gets answered. “Thé, where are you? I’m here!”, she yells but there’s no response from Theresa, only some heavy breathing. Sylvia looks at her phone screen, is this a prank, is this real? “Theresa, this is NOT funny, answer me! Where are you?!”, she yells in panic. The call gets disconnected.
Sylvia does not know what to do next, call her again, or head inside and figure it all out on her own? She decides to cross the road again and head inside. She enters the main gate of the school. Oh, how she missed the beautiful trees, little waterfalls and modern sculptures in the garden of the school. She climbs up the stairs to enter the main doors. One thing she did not miss were those doors, huge, wood, heavy and making a lot of noise opening. She enters the main hallway and almost bumps into the director, Professor Sanders. “Miss Harrolds, you’re back. Good to have you back inside these doors. Can we schedule an appointment later today, just a quick chat, around 1 maybe?” he asks her. “Sure, professor Sanders, thank you”, she briefly answers and quickly moves down the main hallway. Before entering the main lobby, she looks nervously around her, still no clue where Theresa is.
When she enters the main lobby, she pulls out her phone once again to check where Theresa is. She sits down on one of the comfortable couches in the main lobby. She looks around her, this lobby is so nice… Heigh ceilings, lots of natural daylight, bright colors and nice paintings on the wall, made mostly by the art students which are students on the school. Sylvia opens the “Find My”-app and taps on Theresa’s name. Location keeps on loading, but it has moved since the last time she checked the app. Now it’s somewhere in the building, but the app cannot determine her exact location yet. Sylvia keeps on waiting for the app to load the exact location when yet another professor walks up to her. It’s professor Yang, her music teacher. “Sylvia, good to have you back. But you can’t just sit here, come to class, we’re waiting for you…“ she tells Sylvia while looking her in the eyes. Sylvia can feel that she’s very annoyed that she found her sitting in the lobby on her phone. “Sorry professor Yang, I was just checking wh…“, she could not even finish what she was saying, professor Yang interrupts her abruptly, “I don’t care, no phones during school hours, you know this. Now, come on, let’s go”, she replies and starts walking towards the big round staircase.
Sylvia follows professor Yang up the staircase two floors up and enters the classroom. All the students in the classroom stop what they’re doing and stare at her, they whisper things into each others ears while follow every step Sylvia makes. She is highly uncomfortable and starts shaking again. Sylvia looks around in the classroom, she always loved this space, it’s huge, high ceilings, red comfortable seats placed on a slight slope in half a circle with a circled shape stage in the middle of the room with big spotlights. She walks up to the top row of seats and sits down where she usually sits, but usually with Theresa in the seat next to her. She pulls out her phone once again, to see a message from Theresa. “Meet me in the bathrooms in 10 minutes” it reads. It was sent 5 minutes ago. Professor Yang yells at Sylvia, “Theresa, no phones in the classroom or you’ll be dismissed from the class!”. Sylvia looks up with tears in her eyes. She’s unsure what to do, excuse herself to meet up with Theresa or stay in the classroom and be miserable all hour long. She takes a deep breath and pulls out her iPad from her backpack and opens up the school app to focus on the class.
