Chapter 4

Whispers of Betrayal: Shadows in the Alley

Sylvia is trying her best to focus on the class by professor Yang, but all that has happened this morning is making her worry. She starts to think about Andrew, his messages, his unwanted calls… Is he behind the disappearance of Theresa? Or is she just messing with her to be funny? Or are they in it together and is this all a prank? Suddenly Sylvia hears professor Yang yell her name. “Sylvia, for the third time, can you please come down to the stage to practice with me?!”, she yells annoyed. Right when she’s about to stand up from her chair the fire alarm rings, that god awful loud sound. “Okay students, leave all your belongings where they are, you know the drill, down the stairs, straight outside, wait at the main gate for me, from there on, we will cross the road to the park. Off you go, it’s probably false alarm, we will be back before you know it!”, professor Yang tells her students. All students stand from their chairs and slowly move to the exit of the classroom, down the stairs, following all other students from the school to the main gate. Sylvia is the last to arrive at the main gate, just before she want to check where professor Yang is, she receives a message.

‘Where are you?’, it’s a message from Theresa. Sylvia can’t believe her eyes, and without hesitating she opens the ‘Find My’-app once again. There’s an exact location from Theresa known, it’s in the alley behind the school, where the employee entrances and dumpsters are. She quickly looks around, no professor Yang yet and none of the students seem to notice she’s standing here by herself. She quickly turns around and moves to the side of the building, towards the alley where the last known location from Theresa is. Sylvia nervously looks around, in hope to see Theresa, but there’s no one to be seen in the alley. She walks up to the dumpsters to check if she’s behind them, when suddenly there’s a loud bang. Sylvia screams. “What are you doing here young lady?”, it’s Vadim, the head chef of the school who just closed the employee exit behind him. “Oh Vadim, you scared me. I’m looking for Theresa, she should be here”, Sylvia quickly responds while looking around. “No one is here and you should not be here as well”, he replies while walking to the front of the building to join the rest of the students and professors. Sylvia doubts, should she join the rest, or keep on looking for Theresa? Come on, is that a serious question? She pulls out her phone to call Theresa, to check where she is.

Sylvia is completely quiet, in order for her to locate where Theresa is. She is one of those people who always keeps their phone on silent, so she should only hear a small buzzing sound. The phone gets connected to her voicemail immediately. She tries again and hears the buzzing sound of a phone, right next to her, in the dumpster. Wild and quite horrible thoughts cross Sylvia’s mind in a split second. She’s afraid to open the dumpster, but if she doesn’t open it, she will not be able to know if… She doesn’t even finish that thought in her head and opens the dumpster. The door opens with a loud bang. There’s not much to be seen, besides many trash bags. Sylvia turns on the flashlight of her phone and looks inside the dumpster. “Theresa?”, she quietly whispers into the dumpster, but no reply. She calls Theresa’s phone once again and sees a phone screen light up in one of the trash bags. She gasps. She slowly reaches the trash bag and decides to slowly and gently pulls out the trash bag to find out what’s inside, and mostly, why Theresa’s phone is in a trash bag.

She gently places the trash bag on the ground, kneels down and opens it. “What?”, she gasps out loud. When she looks inside trash bag she sees the backpack of Theresa, together with her jacket and mobile phone. She’s confused and looks around if she can see anyone, but there’s no one around. She checks Theresa’s jacket to see if there are any clues, notes, or anything, but her jacket is empty. She pulls out Theresa’s phone, but she is unable to unlock it without her passcode. Suddenly, Sylvia hears footsteps quickly approaching. Just when she wants to stand up and look around, she gets hit in the back of her head with an object. She gets dizzy and falls on the ground. Moments later, she gets dragged by her feet over the ground. She tries to scream or move, but she’s too weak. She opens her eyes, but everything’s still fuzzy. She tries to focus on what she sees, she recognizes they’re at the parking lot of the professors. Suddenly they stop moving, this is her chance! Stand up, run way, yell for help, are all the thoughts crossing her mind, but before she even gets the chance to try, the person who knocked her down, lifts her up by the waste and throws her in the trunk of a car and they slam the trunk. It’s closed, and completely dark inside.
