Chapter 1

Flight through the Shadows: A Desperate Escape

“Alex, where is the padlock? We need to lock up the basement so they can’t escape or even try to!”, Patrick yells in the kitchen. “Hell I know, you should know where you keep your tools, it’s not my problem you keep on losing everything, hurry up now!”, Alex replies. Alex continues washing his bloody hands in the bathroom when he hears a loud bang and Patrick yelling “She’s escaping!”. He drops the soap and turns off the water and runs to the kitchen, “What have you done?! Grab her!” he yells to him. A woman, somewhere mid-thirties in a muddy once white dress and greasy white curls runs towards the door, opens it with all the power she has and runs outside, into the dark forest. Not a light to be seen in the distance, only the moonlight shines through the tall trees, but there are so many trees, you can imagine how dark it is in this forest.

The woman runs for her life, while breathing heavily. She’s not wearing any shoes. It’s hard to see anything, branches and rocks on the floor, anything. It has been raining for the past couple of days, so she gets wet and dirty feet, but this does not slow her down. She keeps running, but gets out of breath after a couple of minutes. She hides behind a big tree and tries to be quiet but catches her breath at the same time. She checks if it’s safe by sticking her head around the tree, she sees the torchlights of the men in the far distance, they’re yelling at her to come back. She no longer hesitates and starts running again, but not the same direction again, she takes a sharp left turn, in hope to distract them. After a minute or two, she hears water. She follows the sound and ends up at a small river. Even though she can’t see if it’s safe to cross the river, she runs into the water as quietly as possible, but the splashes are getting loud as she slips on one of the rocks on the bottom of the river. She gives a short yell. She stands still and looks around her, the men are nowhere to be seen, she needs to act quick and keep on going before they get her.

The other side of the water is just a few steps away, but from the corner of her eye the woman sees the flashlights from the two men chasing her again, she rushes out of the water and runs through the trees again. Puddles of mud do not scare her anymore at this time. For a second she stands still to look around, looks left, right, … is there any sign of a town or even a road nearby? When she looks to the right she can see a house with lights on in the far distance. She doesn’t hesitate for a single second and runs towards the house, which is clearly further away than originally thought, but she’s not ready to give up and runs even faster. A minute of running passes by and she needs to catch a breath. She sits down for a second, but there’s not much time, she can hear Alex and Patrick getting closer, yelling for her to come back. She quickly stands up and continues running towards the home she saw earlier. She takes a good breath, takes another look behind her, they’re still pretty far away, but definitely getting closer by the minute, time to run again. The closer to the house she gets, she notices a little town on the left from the house, just a few minutes from the house. She directly changes plans, takes a slight left and heads towards the little town.

“Where is this little bitch?! How can you be this stupid to let her escape! Unbelievable!”, Alex yells to Patrick while they’re running full speed. Patrick stays silent to focus on his breathing, he doesn’t have the best health to be this fast, but he’s not willing to give up. They slightly slow down to look around with their flashlights, looking for the runaway-girl. “There she is! She’s running towards Margret’s townhouse! Not smart, she’s not home, haha!”, Patrick laughs, “Let’s go!” he adds and starts running again. Patrick found motivation again and starts running even faster, he overtakes Alex. “Hey, I didn’t know you had it in you, I’m the track runner here, not you, you’re the one with the bad heart!”, Alex yells while running. They keep running towards the house the woman was running towards, not knowing she changed plans and runs right into the little town by now. As soon as they arrive to Margret’s townhouse, they start searching for the woman. They point their flashlights at the house, the garage, the foundation, but are unable to find the woman. Alex pulls out his keys and unlocks the front door. “What are you doing man, she’s not home!”, Patrick shouts. “Maybe she’s inside, through an open window or who knows! I’m going to search the house, you stay out here, search for her”, Alex replies while opening the front door and heads inside.
