Chapter 7

Stolen Moments and Desperate Choices

She drives down the road and looks at the signs as she drives by on high speed. She reaches a crossroads and parks the car down the side of the road while taking a closer look at the signs. The nearest highway is at least an hour away from her. She grabs the mobile phone she stole and tries to unlock the phone. No passcode! She’s lucky. She opens the maps-app and zooms out. She quickly finds the forest she once escaped from. It’s hours away according to the app, she needs a different plan. She zooms in again at the current location and swipes the map down, there’s a large city just 20 minutes from her current location, jackpot! Just when she wants to put the phone back in her pocket, she receives a text message.

MARGRET – JUST NOW: “You’ll bring her back to my place at 2PM. Don’t forget the dress. Please confirm”

Without hesitation, she replies with a thumbs up emoji before putting the phone back in her pocket. She gets back into the car and starts the engine again and drives to the city while working out a new plan in her head. Whilst driving, she enjoys the scenery around her. Lots of, what seems, endless green fields, some farms here and there and sometimes even a few cows and sheep enjoying the sunshine and fresh grass. Today is a beautiful day, a beautiful day to enjoy her freedom. She clearly wants to enjoy every second which is about to come, but she tries not to get too comfortable, she’s still on the run…

After a 20 minute drive, she enters the city and looks around for a place to park the car she stole. She quickly finds a spot on the side of the road, in front of a comic store. She gets out of the car and locks the door. She’s unsure what city she’s in, but she is desperately looking for a plan, and maybe some food. It’s been forever since she had a proper meal. Scanning her surroundings, she finds a food truck at the traffic lights on the pavement, selling soups and hot dogs. She walks up to the friendly woman in the food truck. “Hello, how can I help you?”, the woman asks her. “Two hot dogs”, she quietly whispers back. She doesn’t want to attract any attention from the people on the street, maybe they’ll know someone who knows Margret, the old woman, or one of the three men who’ve kidnapped her twice already. The woman behind the counter of the food truck hands her two hot dogs. “That’ll be five even, please”, she says while looking at her. She doesn’t have any money, she can confess, lie about it or… Before she can even finish the sentence in her head, she runs away full speed. “Hey! Get back here! You need to pay for your food!”, the woman from the food truck desperately yells at her. The woman keeps on running, not looking around. A short minute later, she spots a beautiful park on the other side of the road and decides to cross the road to find a quiet place to enjoy her stolen hot dogs. She enters the park, while scanning the park for a quiet place to sit. Not much later, the spots a lake. She walks up to the lake, and sits on the grass on the waterside. Time to relax, catch a breath and enjoy her first meal in days, or even weeks, ’cause by now, she clearly lost track of what day it is.

She pulls out the phone from her pocket again to figure out what her next move will be. Will she find another police station to try her luck, or will she go back to the forest she came from? She has a car now, she can save everyone and be free. She has the feeling she’s being watched, she looks around and feels like everyone passing by is staring at her, like she’s the biggest criminal in town and is out for her. Or is she just getting delusional?
