The man with the crooked smile
The woman finishes her second hotdog and stands up to walk away, finding out where to go next. Just when she stood up from the grass, she spotted a man on the other side of the lake. He’s wearing a full black suit, black tie but white shoes. He seems to be staring directly at her and wears a crooked smile on his face. She looks around, is he staring at her or someone else, she wonders, but there’s no-one to be seen around her. Who is he and why is he staring at her? Her heartbeat fastens and she’s having a hard time breathing normally all the sudden. She takes three steps back, the man keeps staring at her. She quickly turns around and starts walking towards the entrance of the park. Just before she reaches the gate, she turns around one last time to see if the man was really staring at her. The man was now standing on the bridge, slowly walking towards her. She starts running, she needs to head back to the car and drive away from here. The woman is very glad it’s a sunny day today, all she’s wearing are the jeans and a red crewneck sweater she’s gotten from the red-haired woman in the farm. She keeps running, back the way she came from. She can see the food truck at the crossroads already. She runs towards it, when the woman behind the counter of the truck spots her and makes heavy movements with her arms while yelling at her. “Hey! You! Come back now, you need to pay!”, but she’s not planning on stopping, she doesn’t have any money anyway. She quickly reaches the car, unlocks the doors, gets into the car and quickly locks the doors again. She takes a deep breath and takes a look in front of her. There, at the food truck at the crossroads he is again, the man with the crooked smile. Standing still, hands in his pockets. Staring while smiling at her. She needs to move now.
She quickly starts the engine of the car and turns the steering wheel all the way to the left. She makes a sharp left turn, so the car is facing the opposite direction from the man, and takes off full speed. No clue where she’s going next, she has no clue where to go, she needs to make a new plan as this plan was quickly ruined by the man with the crooked smile. A few minutes later, the woman spots a gas station on her right. She pulls up and stops the engine of the car. She grabs the phone she stole earlier to check the maps-app, but a message appears on the lock screen.
MIGUEL – 20 MINUTES AGO: “Where are you? Margret is waiting, she’s getting impatient with your behavior! If we don’t hear back from you in 15 minutes, we will come get her ourselves”
“Shit”, she mumbles. The message was sent 20 minutes ago, they probably already know what happened back at the farm by now, they’re probably already looking for her, is that why the man with the crooked smile was in the park? Is he working for them as well? Are they tracking this phone to get to her? She needs to get rid of this phone, pronto, but she has no idea where to go without the phone and its maps-app. She starts to panic, but suddenly has a plan. Maybe they have a paper route map at the gas station. She throws the phone on the passenger seat and opens the door of the car. She slams it shut, locks the doors and walks towards the entrance of the shop of the gas station. She heads in and looks around like. She quickly spots the clerk of the shop on her right, behind the register. He looks at her like he just saw a ghost. She quickly walked up to him. “Paper route map?”, she asks while trying to control her shaking hands. The clerk looks at her, turns around and opens a large steel cabinet behind him. He pulls out a cardboard box and places it in front of him on the desk. “You’re looking for a detailed map of the area for hiking, or just a regular one?”, he asks her. “Regular”, she quickly answers. “Okay, here you go. It’s like 10 years old, you can just take it, I won’t charge you for it”. She grabs it, opens it and puts it on the desk. With her index finger she scans the map but is unable to locate where she currently is and looks up to the clerk with fear in her eyes. The clerk grabs a red sharpie and places an x with a circle around it on the map. “Here we are right now, where are you heading to?”, he asks her while creating a somewhat polite yet nervous smile on his face. “Thank you”, she replies, turning around towards the door of the shop. She quickly opens it with her shoulder and walks up to the car.
She unlocks the car and gets in, but leaves the door open. She puts the map on the dashboard while grabbing the phone from the passenger seat and gets back out of the car. She places the phone in front of her left front tire before getting back into the car. She quickly starts the engine and throws the map on the passenger seat. She then closes the door, fastens her seatbelt and slowly starts to drive. The crunching sound of the phone makes her giggle a bit. If they were tracking this phone, they had no leads by now anymore. Whilst giggling, she looks up through the windshield. She spots the clerk from the shop staring out the window from the shop, talking to someone on the phone. She really needs to get out of here, right now, he might be working with the kidnappers as well. She’s starting to freak out, is she getting paranoid, or not? She quickly presses the gas pedal down and takes off full speed.
