Chapter 11

A Glamorous Invitation: An Unexpected Evening

Gabbie enters the house of Cármen, the hallway is filled with lots of sunlight from the windows and glass backdoor. The high ceilings together with the white walls make the room very spacious. The hallway has white marble floors and a modern rounded arch towards the rest of the home. Big plans are carefully placed on her right, on the left a small cabinet with a glass vase filled with colorful flowers on top. Two red chairs, one on each side, are inviting her with a warm embrace to her home. She scans the room, a very homey feeling. She enters the living room, which has an old Herringbone floor. It creeks with the first step she places on the flooring. Right around the corner of the wall is the living room, with a comfortable couch and big plants placed in front of the large window, like what she saw from the outside. On her left is a wide staircase leading upstairs. The steps are from the same Herringbone structure and the railing is made from a black matte iron. Just when she wants to take a peek on what’s upstairs, Cármen passes her and walks into the kitchen. “Welcome to my home, Gabbie! Feel free to look around, Mi casa es su casa!”, she cheerly shouts. Gabbie follows her into the kitchen, which is situated in the middle of the room. With counters on the left and right and a big marbled kitchen island in the middle of the room. It’s also situated at the end of the home and has a floor-to-ceiling glass door leading to the backyard.

Cármen walks up to the large fridge and opens the left door, looks around and grabs some bowls and places them on the kitchen island. She walks around the kitchen while leaving the fridge open. Opens a cabinet and grabs some bowls and carefully places them on the kitchen island as well. She fills both with some chips, two different kinds and walks up to the open cabinet next to the open fridge to grab two large wine glasses. “Here, Gabbie, take these snacks already. You can open the doors and have a seat in the garden. I’ll pour us some and I’ll join you in just a minute!”, she tells Gabbie. Gabbie grabs the bowls of chips and dips and opens the big glass doors to the garden. It’s well maintained with beautiful flower beds. She sits down on the patio furniture. It looks brand new. She enjoys the peace and quiet, together with the warm rays of sun on her face. A short minute later, Cármen walks out of the door and poses cheerfully with two glasses of wine in her hand, “Here we go! It’s wine o’clock my lady!”, she shouts while putting one of the glasses on the table in front of Gabbie and sits down on the other side of the table. “Take a sip! I hope you’ll like it, I love it. But if you don’t, tell me, I’ve got other wines in the fridge for you to try”, Cármen tells while giving Gabbie a wink. Gabbie pulls the glass to her lips and she takes a big sip. “Hmm, lovely”, she carefully assures her. They sit in complete silence for the following minutes, enjoying the peace and quietness, the wine, snacks and warmth of the sun.

Cármen suddenly breaks the silence by standing up from her chair and looking at Gabbie. “Let’s get you dressed! The place we go to is slightly up-scale, you won’t enter with jeans. I’ve got just the outfit for you! Come on, I’ll show you”, she cheerfully says while grabbing Gabbie’s arm, trying to drag her out of her chair. “W… What? I mean, what? If it’s too much trouble, I’ll just stay here? I don’t have any money anyways, they… They took it all…”, Gabbie nervously replied. “Don’t be crazy, silly, I’m taking you out, it’s my treat! Now, come on, let’s get you ready!”, Cármen happily replies. Gabbie pushes her chair backwards and gets up. They both walk back in to the house of Cármen and walk up the stairs together. On the landing, they take a right and walk into the door straight ahead of them. Gabbie stands still in front of the open door. “Wow, this… This is your closet?”, she asks. “Yeah, sorry, when I built this house, I just needed to have a walk-in-closet. It’s a bit too much, but I like it”, Cármen replies while laughing. Cármen browses through her dresses and stops at a glittery long black dress and grabs the hanger. She pulls out the dress and shows it to Gabbie. “This one will do, and together with…”, she turns around and grabs a pair of shiny black high heels, “These shoes. You will look stunning!”, she continues. Cármen gives the dress and shoes to Gabbie and walks out of the walk-in-closet and takes the door on her right. Gabbie follows her, it’s Cármen’s bedroom. A big, bright room, filled with flowers and portraits of Marilyn Monroe on each wall. The one more colorful and bigger than the other. In the corner is a vanity table with a big mirror and nice lighting. Cármen points Gabbie towards the table. “Here, have a seat. I’ll show you how to do your hair and later I’ll do your make-up!”, she excitingly tells her. Gabbie sits down and Cármen quickly brushes her hands through her hair. “Here, let’s straighten this part here, and then give you a high ponytail. It’ll look stunning!”, Cármen tells her with sparkles in her eyes. She lets down her hair again and walks out the room. “Time for you to get into that dress, Gabbie! I’ll be back in a couple of minutes, and we will do your hair and make-up! In the meantime, I’ll get myself ready as well”, she tells her while walking back into her walk-in-closet.
