Chapter 19

Ten minutes later the police officers, who investigated the break-in into her home yesterday, arrived. They entered her home and listened to the women talking to them about finding random notes and the black flower in the bedroom. They escorted both Cármen and Monica outside while they swept the home from top to bottom for other clues or other items which should not belong in her home. After a couple of minutes, the male officer walks out of the door and walks straight up to the women. “Miss Aguilar, I’m sorry to tell you this, but your home is now a crime scene. We are going to check the home on fingerprints and DNA left by the person who entered your home. Usually, this should take no longer than two days. Do you have any other place to stay in the meantime?”, he asked her. “Yes?”, Cármen replied while looking at Monica. “No worries, she will stay at my home, we live just a couple minutes up north”, Monica replied immediately. “Okay, thank you for understanding. We will give you a call as soon as the investigation is done and then you can move back home”, the officer replied and he walked back inside her home. “My God, my home… I’m sorry, it seems I have to stay with you a little longer”, Cármen looks at Monica with fear in her eyes. Just before Monica could reply with a comforting reply as she’s an expert in, Cármen’s phone starts buzzing. She pulls her phone from her back pocket. “It’s the hospital”, she looks at Monica, holds her hand and replies to the phone call.

“Miss Aguilar, it’s nurse Redstone from Mainland Hospital. I’m calling in the name of Doctor Stevenson. Your friend, Gabbie, she’s awake and well”, nurse Redstone tells Cármen with a monotone voice. “Oh that’s great news!”, Cármen yells. “When can I see her?”, she adds. It’s silent on the other side of the phone for seconds before nurse Redstone replies, “Visiting hours are as listed on our website, daily from 5 to 6:30PM”. Cármen thanks the nurse and ends the phone call. “Gabbie’s awake and well, I can visit her tonight at 5!”, she shouts excitedly. “Oh, Carmelita! This is the good news you needed! Okay, so we will go to the hospital tonight. But first, sorry to ruin the mood, let’s head back home and see if we can locate Angéla. We need to find her”, Monica replied. The women agree, they need to get into business and track down who kidnapped Angéla before visiting hour starts at the hospital. They head back to Monica’s car and drive back to the house. Upon arrival, Cármen checks her phone for missed calls and unread messages. “Monica, I have a missed call from Angéla, it was right when the police arrived at my home”, she tells Monica while holding her right arm with a firm grip. “What are you waiting for, call her back! She needs us!”, Monica replied in shock. Cármen taps the screen and the phone calls her number. She puts her phone on speaker mode and they both wait. The dial tone is endless, but eventually it gets redirected to her voicemail. Cármen tries again, but again without success. “Damn it”, she mumbles. Right at that moment, she receives a text from Angéla’s phone. “Oh my god, Monica. It’s another photo”, Cármen shows the photo to Monica. It shows Angéla being shoved in a barrel of water. They can only see the back of her head while a big hand pushes her down the water. They look at each other, no clue what to say or do next.
